Update for Marriage & Civil Partnership Ceremonies

Update for Period of National Restrictions

In order to support the UK Government’s Stay at Home message – only essential appointments will be undertaken

Marriage & Civil Partnership Ceremonies

Following the announcement by the Prime Minister, from 5th January 2021 marriage and civil partnership ceremonies should only take place in exceptional circumstances (for example, urgent marriages where one of those getting married is seriously ill and not expected to recover, or due to undergo debilitating treatment or life-changing surgery).  In such circumstances, ceremonies must only take place with up to 6 people, dependent on Covid-safe room capacity.

NO receptions are allowed.

We are contacting couples with ceremonies booked during these restrictions to assist them in postponing, amending or cancelling their ceremony.

Notice of Marriage / Civil Partnership

During the period of the National Lockdown we will only be taking essential Notice of Marriage / Civil Partnership appointments.

Those couples who live outside of Gloucestershire should contact their local Register Office to find out what arrangements they have put in place for notices which need to be given.

High Volume of Calls

On Mondays and at certain times of the day (particularly 12-2.30pm) we may experience a higher volume of calls to book birth and death appointments and ceremonies. Please bear with us and we will do our best to answer your call as soon as possible. Alternatively you can book online for birth or death appointments

Civil Partnerships

The Civil Partnerships (Opposite-sex Couples) Regulations 2019, which extend eligibility for forming civil partnerships to opposite-sex couples, will come into force on 2 December 2019.

Gloucestershire Registration Authority is now able to take bookings for notices of civil partnership for any couple eligible to form a civil partnership to give notice from 2 December 2019, which will allow the first civil partnerships under the standard procedure to be formed from 31 December 2019.

There are two options for forming a Civil Partnership in Gloucestershire:

A statutory registration consists of signing a civil partnership schedule and comprises the couple, two witnesses and the civil partnership registrar.  (No other guests, dependents or minors, however young, are able to attend this registration.) The registration will take place in a designated room at a registration office in Cheltenham or Gloucester and does not include any ceremony.

An enhanced ceremony will take place in one of our own ceremony rooms or at any of the licensed venues throughout the county.  It enables you to make promises to each other and to exchange rings.  The ceremony can include up to two non-religious readings and non-religious music.  You may invite as many guests as the room is licensed to hold but this number must include the couple and the civil partnership registrar.

Further information

For further information about the format of the ceremonies we offer please contact our ceremonies team on 01452 425060 (option 3) or email ceremonies@gloucestershire.gov.uk
